After three grueling rounds of auditions, the producers of THE SOUND OF MUSIC are proud to announce that 18 of the Philippines’ most talented young actors and actresses have been chosen to play the roles of the young von Trapp children in the forthcoming international production of THE SOUND OF MUSIC.

“Children bring FUN and INSPIRATION… an authenticity and openness that is raw and genuine.” – says Carmen Pretorius. “They bring MAGIC to the show!”,

she remarks with a big smile as she excitedly talks about her lead role and working with children in the acclaimed show THE SOUND OF MUSIC, which tells the uplifting true story of Maria, the fun-loving governess who changes the lives of the widowed Captain von Trapp and his seven children by reintroducing them to music, culminating in the family’s escape across the Austrian mountains as tensions rise prior to the outbreak of World War II.

Despite only being in her twenties, Carmen is one of South Africa’s most established young performers, having crafted a successful career in both the English and Afrikaans stage and screen industries. After her professional theatrical debut in 2008, garnering 2 theatre award nominations for her role as Gabriella Montez (High School Musical Live Onstage), she played on several international tours, with musical theatre credits that include Footloose The Musical, MAMMA MIA!, Cabaret, and Jersey Boys.

When she toured with THE SOUND OF MUSIC, she spent a year playing Liezl Von Trapp in SA, Singapore, New Zealand, and China. This garnered her a nomination for “Best Actress in a Musical” at the Fleur de Cap Theatre Awards. She then moved over into the role of Maria, which she played in Hong Kong, China, and Jakarta.

During the press launch last July 18 at the Diamond Hotel Constellation, Carmen was asked about what she felt about playing Maria in THE SOUND OF MUSIC and what it was like having children perform their roles professionally on stage.

“The storytelling makes it relatable for the world, and the music draws you in melodically.”

“The themes in the story are universal — love, war, and growth.”

“As for the children — It makes all the kids in the audience feel like it’s something THEY can do.”

What is her advice for these children who wish to pursue a career in music and stage performance?

“Always watch and learn. Never forget that it’s supposed to be FUN!”

Over 400 children from all over the Philippines came to audition for the coveted roles of six of the seven von Trapp brood – the small and cute Gretl, the brothers Friedrich and Kurt, as well as their sisters Marta, Brigitta, and Louisa. Three children have been chosen to alternate each character throughout the Manila season. Jonny Bowles, CHILDREN’S DIRECTOR, flew in from London to oversee all three days of the auditions, during which the youngsters were put through a series of acting, singing and dancing tests. The best of the best were chosen, aged from 6 to 13, and will start rehearsals shortly.

Mr. Bowles said, “I was delighted with the number of children that auditioned, and we have found some really fantastic young performers. The children are paramount to the production and I can’t wait to start teaching them all the show. It is the opportunity of a lifetime for these talented youngsters to star in a West End production of this calibre, and Filipino audiences will be astounded at the quality of their performances.”

“I would like to say a big thank you and ‘Well Done’ to all those who auditioned and to those who were successful,” Mr. Bowles added.
